A Unified Analysis of Crosslinguistic Morphological Gemination*

چکیده
In most analyses, a simple process tackles the two issues simultaneously. Inevitably, the strong cross-linguistic variation associated with issue (b) is tamed by means of parameters internal to the gemination process itself (see, among others, Lombardy and McCarthy (1990) for a crosslinguistic analysis; Archangeli (1987) and Hohulin and Kenstowicz (1979) for Keley-i; Hardy and Montler (1988a, 1988b) for Alabama; Shetler (1976) for Balangao). By distinguishing the two issues, the analysis presented here identifies a unique and non parametric gemination process, while the specific gemination pattern of a language follows from independently motivated universal wellformedness constraints. As for issue (a), I follow Lombardi and McCarthy (1990) and recognize the existence of a purely prosodic affix constituted of an empty mora. Gemination emerges when this affix is inserted in a base and filled by one of the nearby segments, as illustrated by the derivation below from Keley-i:

The representation of Hebrew words: evidence from the obligatory contour principle.
The Hebrew root morpheme typically consists of three consonants. Hebrew allows a gemination of a root consonant, but constrains its location [McCarthy, J. (1979). Formal problems in semitic phonology and morphology. Cambridge, MA; MIT Ph.D. dissertation. Distributed by Indiana University Linguistics Club. Garland Press, New York, 1985]. A gemination of a root-consonant is permitted at the end o...
متن کاملThe imperfective semantics of durative gemination in Northern Paiute
Like other Numic languages (Uto-Aztecan), Northern Paiute has a morphological process of durative gemination, which conveys some type of aspect. I describe the semantics of durative gemination in Northern Paiute, locating it within an emerging typology of imperfective aspect from the formal semantics literature. Like the imperfective aspect in other languages, durative gemination has an event-i...
متن کاملConsonant Gemination in Japanese Loanword Phonology
The distribution of geminate obstruents in Japanese loanwords appears very complex. Some consonants are more prone to gemination than others, on the one hand, and one and the same consonant is more likely to geminate in some phonological contexts than in others, on the other hand. This paper tackles these problems by considering the relationship between consonant gemination in native words and ...
